On January 26th, 1924 the Swedian steamer "salen" of

Gothenburg was captured in the Canton deita at a point near

Escape Reach, 5 miles east of Champoa light, by Chinese

pirates who looted the ship and stole property belonging to

the snip-owners to the value of 10,000 swedish Croma, and

to the Captain, the officers and the araw to the amount of

18,645 Swedian Croans.

The "balen" was carrying 160 chinese coolies from Hong❤

kong to Canton and back again to Hongkong. then the ship

left Canton eight armed pirates hidden amongst the coolies

suddenly began to fire, taking charge of the bridge and

forced the ship to run aground in Escape aench. Accomplices

let down the gangway and sailed by signals four sampans with

6) well-armed pirates, who were waiting in the vicinity, to

approach the steamer which was then looted.

The Chinese

pilot, two Chinese sailors and the chief coclie were made

prisoners and taken azanore. The pirates finally left the

steaner where it stood. M.B.M. gun-boat "Moorhen" arrived

later on the spot and kindly assisted the Swedish ship.

The Ghiness authorities at Canton reported to the

British Consul-üsneral, who was then in charge of Svedien

interesta in Canton, on the capture and execution of pirate: implicated in the "salen" piracy, including the pirate oklej

against the pirates by General Li Yu-iin.
